The Smokey Mountains of North Carolina are  just part of the Appalachian Mountain range that stretches from Newfoundland in the north to Mississippi in the south. The highest peaks of which lay in North Carolina. The highest of the group Mount Mitchell rises 6684 ft and is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. No wonder then that for skiing in the east USA North Carolina is the place to go.

There are 6 main ski areas to choose from in North Carolina. These are:

Due to the elevation and subsequent climate these snow ski resorts have a good covering of natural snow and state of the art snowmaking and grooming machines that can keep the slopes in good condition throughout the season. The season runs from Mid-November until April and to make the best of the available season some resorts have floodlight night skiing.

There are good facilities for skiers of all abilities and ages. Especially good for families and beginners with several quality ski schools to get you started or improve your skiing technique.

Nearest serving airport is Hickory Regional Airport

If you want to try something different in the snow try Hawksnest Snow Tubing. Run in lanes of snow you descend on an inflatable tire tube. Great fun for all the family.
